Dr. Steffanie Jacobson is a Board-Certified Specialist in Internal Medicine for dogs and cats, and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).
The ACVIM is the international certifying organization for veterinary specialists. The ACVIM is dedicated to improving the lives of animals and people through education, training and certification of specialists in veterinary internal medicine, discovery and dissemination of new medical knowledge, and increasing public awareness of advances in veterinary medical care. When a diagnosis has proven difficult or a treatment not effective, a specialist is more adept at finding the problem or adjusting therapies for a better outcome.
In addition to completing undergraduate training and four years of veterinary school, Board-certified Veterinary Specialists are similar to their human medical counterparts in that they have completed an internship and residency in their specialized field (an additional 3-5 years training). In addition to this extensive training, a Board-certified Veterinary Specialist must pass rigorous examinations to achieve Board certification from the ACVIM. Specialists bring a greater understanding in the area of internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, or neurology, and have a greater knowledge of the unusual, the uncommon, or rare in both large and small animals.
Dr. Jacobson is published in veterinary textbooks and journals; she taught veterinary students at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and has lectured at veterinary schools and a regional meeting in New England. In addition to her extensive academic background, Dr. Jacobson has 24 years of clinical experience outside of academia. She has held positions at large specialty /referral centers, hybrid general and specialty practices, as well as a brief engagement at the Boulder Humane Society. For the past 14-years Dr. Jacobson has had the privilege of providing veterinary services to the Gunnison valley as the practice owner and principal veterinarian at The Tomichi Pet Care Center.
Dr. Jacobson has extensive formal training in endoscopy procedures, cardiac and abdominal ultrasound, emergency medicine, intensive care, cardiology, oncology, neurology, endocrinology, dermatology, anesthesiology, pain management, and dentistry.
